REPORT:
Sadakathullah Appa College and Sahitya
Akademi jointly conducted a symposium on religion and literature on Tuesday, 28th
august 2018 at the college auditorium Sadakathullah Appa College,
Tirunelveli.
The inaugural session commenced at 10:00 am.
The
welcome address and the keynote address was delivered by Sirpi Balasubramanian,
convener,
Tamil advisory board, SahityaAkademi, Alhaj.T.E.S. FathuRabbani,
secretary, Sadakathullah Appa College, chaired the inaugural session.
The introductory
address was delivered by Maalan, General Council Member, SahityaAkademi.
Religion has never created a problem in
the context of Tamil Nadu.One of the major reasons for that is the overarching
bondage created by the Tamil language.
The seminar was a best example where people from variousreligion come
together in order to talk about the contributions to Tamil language and
literature.
The
first plenary session began at 11:35 am.
Mr.Thoppil
Mohamed Meeran, novelist and SahityaAkademi prize winner delivered a lecture on
“Contribution of the literature in Islam to the Tamil language”. He mentioned the
first Tamil novelist, MappillaiLebbaiAalim who wrote “MadeenathinNuhas” in 1858
which resembles Paulo Coelho’s alchemist. Also he said about the conversion of
YakoobSitthar to Islam and also about his teaching to the people and concluded by
thanking SahityaAkademi and Sadakathullah AppaCollege.
The
next speaker Dr. A.M. Sonal, assistant professor, St. Mary’s college,
thoothukudi had thrown light on the topic Contribution of the literature in
Christianity to the Tamil language.
She said talked about the emergence of Tamil
Nadu and how Christians started learning Tamil language.
She also mentioned that Christians were the
first to print Tamil literature books.
Also said about henry who was a Jewish by birth came to India and loved Tamil
and contributed for Tamil language by opening a university for the Tamil.
His first book was ThambiranVanakkam which
is about Christian prayers and she also said about many other writers like
AntoPrianso , H.A. Krishnanpillai, etc.
The
next speaker, Dr. S. Mahadaven, head of the department of Tamil, Sadakathullah AppaCollege
highlighted the contribution of the literature in Jainism to the Tamil
language.
He mentioned about many Tamil
literature books Silapadhikaram, Seevakasindhamani, Valaiyapathi, Neelakesi, Soolamani,
Yasodharakaaviyam, Naaladiyar, etc., which was contributed by the Jainism
literature.
The
next speaker dr. sheik Zinda, assistant professor, Sadakathullah AppaCollege,
gave a talk on the topic contribution of the literature in Hinduism to the Tamil
language. He told about the basic
principles of Hindu literature and their vast contribution.
The
next speaker Mr.Maalan general council member SahityaAkademi. Spoke on the
topic contribution of the literature in Buddhism to the Tamil language.
He talked about Manimegali which was first
printed by MahavithuvanShanmugam Pillai, and many other books like
Veerasoliyam, Kundalakesi etc., and mention about the evidences regarding the Buddhists
contribution.
This
session was useful for the students in order to understand the relationship
between religions and have faith and belief in our own religion.
It is also important to understand other
religions. It must also be highlighted
that it was a laudable initiative taken by SahityaAkademi along with
Sadakathullah AppaCollege in order to inculcate inter-religious faith and
harmony among the people through Tamil language.
